Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

Outdated debt

I'm trying to help a friend to resolve a bill for her elderly mother. The attorney claims that she owes $500.00 plus over $620.00 in tacked on charges for a medical bill for a total of over $1,000.00 from 1987. Her mother says she really thought the insurance company paid it. The problem is because health insurance companies dont keep claims in their system that long, we dont really know if she is liable for these charges without a legitimate explanation of benefits. But first and foremost...what is the statute of limitations for this? Can an attorney try to collect on a debt that is 20 years old?

Re: Outdated debt

An attorney can "try" to do anything. This is called junk debt. They buy $1.00 worth of debt for about 2 cents. If they collect 1 out of 4 debts they buy, they make a lot of money.
