Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey
Parents using child's credit
I am 24 years old. The only credit that I have ever asked for was my car loan, which I have paid off. I recently received a letter telling me I was being sued for an outstanding credit card balance. This prompted me to take a look at my credit report. To my surprise, I have 9 potentially negative items on it, but none of them are mine. Turns out, the address used to obtain these forms of credit is my parent's business. I want this off my credit, but I don't want to press criminal charges on my parents. They aren't going to pay the debts off any time soon, but keep telling me they will ''take care of it.'' I was told I have to file a report with the police, but I want to make sure that my parents aren't taken away in cuffs! Please help me to find the least painful way to get everything off my credit, without destroying my parent's lives, or mine!
