Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

property abandonment

I did repair work on a commercial trailer back in August 2006. The owner is from Canada. Despite speaking to him many times...and his assurance that he was coming to pay me and pick up his trailer...here it is the end of Feb 2007, and I am still in possession of said trailer. I informed him of minimal storage fees....to no avail. I have since had to move trailer to another location...it was hindering my work area...and paying additional storage fees. Today, when again calling owner, I find his phone out of service. The trailer has Canadien license plates. He made two payments...one of $500 in Oct 2006, and $1500 in November 2006. The balance owed is approximately $2000. Please advise as to how I can claim ownership . It is now costing me money to store this trailer. Thank you.

Re: property abandonment

You may want to consider filing a mechanic's lien against the property/unpaid balance.
