Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

Just received an information subpoena

Hello!! I hope someone can advise me of what to do in the following matter. I just received a subpoena of a credit card debt opened in 1994. I wasn't aware of this debt and was studying medicine outside the country. I am presently unable to pay the $3,988.26 dollars they are asking for due to the fact that I am unemployed. I am presently preparing for my medical boards and my mother is helping me out with all the expenses. I don't know exactly what should be done. They are telling me I have no other choice. I must pay!! Please help me!

Re: Just received an information subpoena

First, PUT EVERYTHING IN WRITING. If you talk with anyone, WRITE DOWN THEIR NAME, WHO THEY WORK FOR, THE DATE, ETC. Send them a letter disputing the debt. There is a good chance the debt is NOT with the credit card company, but someone who bought the debt. They will try to get you to pay them SOMETHING - DO NOT DO IT! Not a penny!!!!!!! 1) Dispute the debt, 2) demand proof of the debt (they add charges and fees that they can not explain, or that they are not legally entitled to all the time!), 3) AFTER you get info from them, tell them, they are not entitled to collect it, as the debt is over 7 years old, and they can not report it, and if they do, you will sue them for defamation of credit. MANY of the collections people are human shit, pure scum - they LIE, and will say anything to get money out of you. I have seen people who had a few hundred on a credit card, that ends us as a law suit for 2-3 thousand. Mr. Bush's administration has de-regulated and allowed them to do almost anything they want. CHECK YOUR CREDIT REPORT!
