Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

Can I get a reposses car back

I owe $3,000 on a 2000 Hyundai Tiburan (my daughter drives and is supposed to pay for the car). I am 3-months back on payments, totaling $937. They repossessed the car yesterday and told me that if I give them the $937 + $400 Repo fee + $30/day for storage I could have the car back. I sent them all the paperwork they asked for and was about to send money when they told me I couldn't get the car back until I gave them the entire balance due plus repo fee. I asked them why they changed their mind and they said because it's my daughter that drives the car, not me. Is that a legitimate reason?

Assuming that the repossession was lawful in other respects, the creditor does not have to return it to you even if you were to offer much more than it was worth. Their reason seems a bit arbitrary, but it is not unlawful.
