Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

My roommates and I have been living in a apartment for the past 6 months paying our gas bill on time and to the amount listed on the bill. It is now the end of our lease and the gas company have sent us a bill for $1300 saying that we hadn't been paying the full amount for our gas. During our tenure at this apartment, we called the company a number of times to make sure that the bills were correctly under our name and that we were being billed appropriately. They told us that we had. Should we be expected to pay this amount when it is the gas company that made the mistake of billing us incorrectly? As stated earlier, we always paid exactly what was billed to us and on time.
