Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

Possible Scam from Citicorp Credit Services

I received a letter from Citicorp Credit Services stating they were holding a credit balance of over $500 and that I would need to complete a form and send it to their address in Kansas City, MO, including a copy of my driver's license and, if my form was in order and my request approved, they would send the funds. This does not sound quite right to me - could this be a collection attempt or scam?

This sounds like an identity theft scam to me. If you want to help everyone, do this. Use another number that you have for Citicorp (such as the one on the back of your card) or get a number off their web site. Call that number and ask about the letter. Chances are it's bogus. If you find out that is the case or if they can't help, report the matter to the Postal Inspector. You can find your local Postal Inspector in the blue pages of the phone book.

By reading this response you understand that I do not represent you and, that unless you enter a formal retainer agreement with me, I do not represent you nor does this communication establish an attorney-client relationship between you and me. This answer is given to you for informational purposes only and you are advised to formally retain counsel rather than rely solely upon the information provided in this communication.

Sounds fishy to me. Did you ever have a credit card with Citicorp Credit Services? If not, I would not respond to them. If there is a phone number on the letter, you may want to call them and ask them about the letter. Never give out any information to anyone over the telephone or by mail or e-mail unless you are absolutely sure who you are dealing with and what the purpose of the communication is.
