social security disability income

can judgements be taken out of social security disability payments to me ? i was awarded permanent ss disabiltity. lawyers for the credit card companies have judgements against. can they take out of my ssd payments? thanks for your help

Social Security benefit payments are exempt from levy but you must take care not to mix these payments with any other money in a bank account. The court will not sort things out for you. You can also help yourself by having the benefits deposited into a separate bank account with the title "SS Disability Benefits." That may discourage the sheriff from making a levy on the account and save your lawyer a trip to court.
