Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

Student loan

I went a tech school in 1984 and in addition to my student loan I had to pay $100 a month to cover tuition totaling $1800. When I left in '85 I was current on payments. Never received a bill from them paid off my state student loan and now 22 yrs later I received a letter from a collection agency saying I owe the school $4600. Do I have to pay this bill? What recourse do I have?

Re: Student loan

You can fight it. I suggest you actually speak with an attorney instead of relying solely on advice on this board. These cases can get complicated.

Re: Student loan

Dispute the debt in writing, tell them you were paid up in full when you left school, and demand proof of the debt, with a full accounting from the originator. They will NOT be able to do it. 99% chance even if the debt was ever a valid debt, it was written off YEARS ago. They will try to get you to make at least 1 small payment on the claimed obligation - if you do, it will 'revive' the debt.
