Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

Student Changes Mind About Joining Fee-Based Organization

With the intent of joining an organization (sorority), I filled out the application and submitted a fee which was regarded as non-refundable. The organization was not what I envisioned so after a few days, I decided to withdraw from the pledging process. Since the check had not been cashed, I requested a stop payment. Aside from being vindictive, can I expect some legal action from the organization since I stopped the check and if so, would I have a defense?

It's hard to answer without seeing the paper you completed or the document that you indicated that says "non-refundable." I would think that the likelihood of them trying to collect is negligible. If you want a strong opinion, you would need to have a lawyer look at these documents. If you want me to assist you, feel free to call me at 856-546-8010. Good luck!
