Legal Question in Credit and Debt Law in New Jersey

Am I in the wrong

This is my question. My husband and I have a repo on our credit report from 2003, which we owed $11,000 on. We were making monthly payments until we decided to refinance and consolidate all of our debt, including the auto repo. The mortgage company ran our credit report and the repo balance came up in the amount of $0.00 due. We had them double check and it came up the same way. As this being the first time that we have done this, we assumed it to be okay, due to everything else to be on the money. This was in June of this year. We get a letter that was sent to his father in PA and not to our house, which we have been living in for the past 6 years. This past week that they are suing us and will garnish my husband's wages for the remaining amount due to them. If we do not pay them before the year end. I called them and told them what happen and they are not willing to work with us. They told us they will take $3000 off the amount due, which would be $5000.00 if we pay this amount in full. Please let me know if I have any rights to request a monthly statement.
