Its a 4th degree crime, so the max is 18 months in prison. However, it is very unlikely you would see the inside of any prison/jail. Your biggest problem is a felony record at the moment and I doubt you want any type of criminal record. I suggest you consult with an attorney sooner rather than later to try to get this matter resolved.
My initial consultations are always free and I represent clients in Burlington County, so call me at 732/247/3340 to discuss your case.

The offense is a felony. The maximum punishment is 18 months in jail, but I am almost certain that you would not receive any jail time at all.
It is possible that the prosecutor will proceed with the case as a felony. It is also possible that the prosecutor will reduce the charge and have the case prosecuted in municipal court. If that happens, it is likely that the case could be finished very quickly and without a criminal record.

You are looking at fines, possible jail time, and having a criminal record. The amount of merchandise makes this a superior court (county court) case, but it may get sent back down to be heard in the local municipal court anyway. No matter what, at 18 years old I would certainly not go to court on a criminal charge without a lawyer. If you try to do this on your own you may end up finding yourself in a lot of trouble that you might otherwise be able to avoid with a lawyer experienced in criminal cases. Please contact me to duscuss your case in more detail, and so we can see what I can do to help you. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.
