My 19 year old mentally ill child was arrested for shoplifting
My 19 year old mentally ill child was arrested for shoplifting candy worth less than $200.00. What are my options here? Do I need an attorney to represent him? Should I try to speak to the store owner and/or the Prosecutor to get charges redued? If yes, what should I ask for the charge to be reduced to?

Yeah, I would get him an attorney. It sounds like this could be dealt with pretty quick and easy so that it will not require a lot of expense on your part. My consultations are always free, so call me at 732/247/3340 and we can discuss your situation.
Good luck!

Re: My 19 year old mentally ill child was arrested for shoplifting
Your son is looking at heavy fines, a possible jail sentence, mandatory community service, a mandatory payment of $150.00 to the store he shoplifted from, and being permanently banned from that store and any other stores in that chain. However, if he has medical proof that he was disabled due to mental illness and did not know what he was doing, I may be able to get the charge against him dismissed. I am an attorney who has handled cases similar to yours in various courts throughout New Jersey in the past. Please contact me to discuss your case in more detail. I never charge for simply talking to a person about a case. Thank you.

This is one of your son's problems best handled by an attorney. I must note that your maternal instincts are excellent as to how to approach the problem.
You can give me a call if you like.
