Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey
I am 18 years old and I was recently given a court summon for underage gambling at Atlantic City. It was our first time at a casino and I was accompannied by an older friend, who is 22 years old. I was at the casino for more than 2 hours as I stood aside watching my friend play at the table. We didn't realize that I wasn't allowed to be in the casino in the first place because I have encountered different security guards on my way in and I wasn't stopped. When I sat in front of the slot machine, my friend inserted a 10 dollar bill and started to use the machine. I played a few times as well with no intention to "gamble" for money, but more to see how the machine works as a result of my curiosity. However, a security guard then came by and asked for my ID. I showed him my ID and was honest about my age because I did not realize the fact that I wasn't allow to touch the machine until I am over the age of 21. Now with the charge, I am afraid that it will lead to a permanent record that will affect my future education and employment opportunities since I have never convicted any sort of crime. What should I do about this and if I do hire an attorney, what are the chances of avoiding the fine and most importantly, the record?

Slim to none. The State prosecutes over 400 of these cases a year and they win all of them. An attorney can help keep the punishment down. I've had a number of these cases so call me at 732/773/2768 to discuss.
It depends. Each case is unique, so I would need to review the evidence in the case against you before I could give you a more definite answer. Please call me to discuss your case in more detail. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.
