One reason could be that the person does not have a good attorney. There are numerous things that can be done at this point but it sometimes takes a good attorney to actually do them.

Apparently, someone died. Death changes many things, including being held in jail pending an investigation.

By this time the person in jail should have been assigned a public defender if he has not hired a private lawyer yet. The public defender should file for a bail reduction hearing. Obviously the police had enough evidence to arrest the person, but he is entitled to have a hearing on his bail.
