Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

Upon being assaulted by a man who, in a verbal argument at an intersection, got out of his vehicle and approached mine with his passenger, and as i pointed to my wife and two infants in the back seat of my car explaining that the guy drives like an "ass", he slammed my car door against my arm and my wife pleaded for them to leave us alone. In an angry moment I texted the suspect within 10min of the incident stating "You drive like an idiot, I assure you that your boss will hear from me this afternoon now that I know you company phone number and job site, If you had hit me while my wife and children were not in my vehicle I assure you that you and your friend would have paid for it dearly, you drive like an ass go back to your country and drive like that JerK". This was a one time response to this mans actions and I went to the police later that day and signed a complaint for simple assault. The man is now counter complaining "harasement" 2c33-4a" I have spoken to several lawyer's and the fees range between $500-1750 to help me with this case. All of these lawyers have stated that this case should not go to trial as I am at risk for a guilty finding of Harassment charges against me. Other than this one remark minutes after the assault I've made no phone calls or conversation with the suspect in anyway other than filing a police report and signing a simple assault complaint. Should I try and defend myself or should I seek counsel? Im a teacher with very little income, three children and my wife has been laid of twice in the past 10months. This case will be in Union City, NJ jan. 5th 2010. i've got a permanent scare on my hand that was slammed in my car door and a witness statement of the surveillance video that caught the suspect slamming my door on my arm however, the company car dealership with video promised me a copy and somehow a week later they lost the footage. I was later to find out that the company the man works for is located half a block away from the car dealership that had the surveillance video, kind of ironic that the woman at the dealership told me that the video never gets erased and within 7 days it was magically gone. Please help me. Thank you for your time and consideration. This man may also be an undocumented alien.
