Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey
I was caught shoplifting at Shoprite and the value of the goods was $17. They detained me and took the information from my drivers license and have me signed a document and then released me with out calling the police. They gave me a letter indicating I may be receiving a letter in the future for penalties.

It sounds like they will send you a "civil demand" which is a fancy word for demand that you pay them money for the time and expense of detaining you and everything that goes along with it. It doesn't sound like they will be pressing charges but if they do, call a lawyer ASAP.
Jef Henninger is probably right. If a criminal complaint is filed against you, call my office immediately at 201/342/7933, because a conviction for shoplifting will prevent you from getting many jobs because it is theft, a crime of moral turpitude.
They have one year to bring a criminal charge against you. If you are charged with any violation because of this please contact me. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.
Sincerely yours, -Ronald Aronds, Esq.-
