If this is your first offense a good attorney can get you into a diversionary program. I practice in fort lee on a regular basis. The Judge & prosecutor are very reasonable and work well with me. I charge $950 for a case like this.

If you want to be a police officer, you should hire your own attorney to get more attention paid to your matter than what a public defender, who is part time, will provide.

If you are unemployed you can apply for the public defender. If you are working you should hire a private lawyer. You are facing fairly serious penalties that could affect your future employment goals so you don't want to take any chances. Whether your insurance will be affected is up to your insurance company.
