Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

someone I am close to got convicted of a 2C:20-11b(1) in New Jersey today - Feb 19, 2011. This is the first offense of the person that resulted from a momentary lapse in judgement. This person is on a dependent VISA in the states. The amount of the items were valued < $200. What should that person expect in the court after pleading guilty? how much fine? If anything else - what ?

No one will hire her to work for a substantial company. CVS will do a record check if she applies for a job. She should file an appeal if there is a basis for same she should speak with an attorney about an appeal.

Call me if you like.

I don't believe they were convicted based upon what you are writing,. They may have been arrested on February 19, or it is possible that they had a first appearance in court on Saturday, like some courts do have special sessions on Saturday for (Newark, for example). I think that your friend needs to talk to a lawyer on the phone or in person immediately, especially if they may have immigration implications from their actions. The possible penalties include high fines, mandatory community service, and possible jail time. Please have your friend contact me to discuss his case in more detail. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.
