Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey
Unfortunately, I was convicted of underage gambling in Atlantic City, NJ. This happened about two years ago and it was a terrible ordeal. I was with my family in the slot machine area and just pressed a button and I was taken in and then had to show up to court and had to pay a large fine and my license was suspended for six months. When filling out an application for the Department of State that asks: Have you been convicted of a crime (excluding minor traffic offenses) - can I put no?

You did not specify the offense involved or if it was disposed of as a juvenile matter. In New Jersey a disorderly persons, petty disorderly persons or municipal violation are not considered crimes. Special rules also apply to juvenile matters. You should speak with an attorney to guide you and also consider an expungement of your records.
We have a number of lawyers here who could assist you. Please call for an appointment if you are interested.

To be fully honest you should put down "Yes" since you have been convicted of a violation of the New Jersey criminal code and it will show up on any background check done on you. New Jersey does not list violations of the criminal code as felonies and misdemeanors like other states do, so in my opinion any conviction under the New Jersey criminal code should be listed when answering that question on a job application.
