How long can a law enforcement official detain a person without arresting them

The more appropriate question is whether the detention was pursuant to an articulable suspicion that there was probable cause of the commission of a criminal offense that would justify a detention for the purpose of investigation and how long that investigative detention should last under all the circumstances.d
