Criminal Neglect

son purchased a gun out of state, unknown to his father, the son moved to Jersey and filed paperwork to register weapon. son lives in the same town that father is a police officer, yet the father was never contacted during a background check by the police dept that he worked for that eventually registered the hand gun in his sons name...short time later son killed his girlfriend and then himself

Not sure there's a question here although I can guess at what you are driving at. If the son was 18, I'm not sure why the father would have had to be contacted. I'm also not sure what it would have done if they had anyway. Now if he had some type of mental illness that would have came up had they contacted the father, then that may be a different story.
