Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

False Nane

I loaned my ex my car. He was stopped for speeding in New Jersey. I saw my car in the ditch on the Atlantic City expressway. I went to the Farley Plaza police station to ask why my car was on the side of the road and to find out about my keys. The police asked me a few questions about who I loaned my car to. I answered the questions and the next thing I know I was put in handcuffs. I was told I gave a false name of the driver that I let use my car. I have known my ex for 15 years and I gave the only name I have ever known him by. I have a summons to appear in the Hamilton TWP Municipal Court on December 16,2008. I have never been in any kind of legal trouble in my life. What do I need to do about this summons and do I need to bring a lawyer with me. My ex is in jail in New Jersey because the name he was arrested under some years ago was not the name he gave the police when he was stopped for speeding. They ran his prints and the name Curtis Brown came up. I have never heard this name before. I have known him by for 15 years by Ephraim Richard Derrell Reavis. I was called a liar numerous times by the police officers and was told I was protecting Curtis Brown.

Re: False Nane

It sounds like you may need a lawyer to explain the situation properly to the prosecutor. I am not sure what you are charged with but it robably has maximum exposure of 6 months jail since it appears it is in municiapl court. You can call or email me to discuss further. 732_286_2170

Giving false information to authorities is a serious crime but you may have a good faith defense if we can convince the court you actually believed that his name was something else. Give our officse a call. 267.639.3105.

Re: False Nane

I am really sorry to hear how you are being treated and I hope I can help you resolve this misunderstanding. Although my main office is in Philadelphia, I live near Williamstown, NJ so I frequently appear in Hamilton Twp. Given the situation, I will charge you a very reasonable appearance fee to go to Court with you and take care of this....The prosecutor and I will talk about this Monday morning, assuming you write me back!

Mike
