Felony Case with Confidential Informant

can a NJ detective drop the charges in a felony case if the defendent aided him as a confidential informant?

No, a detective has no power to drop charges. Only a Prosecutor can decide how to handle charges. A detective can give input to the prosecutor and in these situations, that input is followed most of the time. I suggest you consult with an attorney before you do anything here.

While the detective has input, charging discretion is ultimately held by the County Prosecutor. Someone seeking consideration for snitching had best have an attorney work out the details in a written cooperation agreement. Be very careful here.
