Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

Forgery by juvenile?

what penalty is a juvenile (13 years old) likely to face if they were charged for intentionally counterfeiting and using 40 bus tickets to go and come back from school? This is the first offense. The value of the tickets is around $60 and would this considered as a felony or misdemeanor? Thank you (asking about a niece who is in this situation)

You are talking about $2,400.00. If she were an adult it would be a third degree crime punishable by up to five years in jail. If she is a first offender probation is likely.

Assuming this is a first offense, she would be an ideal candidate for probationary treatment. There may be a community service component. Restitution will have to be paid for the value of the tickets as well.

Most important is that she learn what she did is wrong - something we strive to do when we represent juveniles.
