Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

I just found out I am charged with three counts of writing a bad check because 3 post dated checks I wrote did not clear. I found out about the charges from a lawyers advertisement that was mailed to me offering to represent me. I never got notice from the courts at all. We called the court to ask about it and was told we have to appear next week. We are not able to go to NJ next week and do not know how to ask for a postponement. As far as I know, only 1 was presented to the bank and was returned. I had every intention of honoring them. After i had problems with the furniture, I fought about it with the furniture company. We have since moved to Virginia (case is in NJ) and do not have the furniture anymore. PLEASE HELP ASAP!!
