This is a very common charge in Bergen County NJ. Mr. Moore is correct is stating that you should not plead to a theft charge. I have a lot of experience in representing individuals charged with shoplifting. If this is the first offense and the individual charged has no prior record, this case will probably be downgraded to the municipal court. At this point you will only be facing a disorderly persons offense. I will be very happy to further explain. I can be reached at 201/646/9600.

If you plead guilty to shoplifting, even if it is reduced to a disorderly person offense and returned to municipal court, you will find getting a decent job nearly impossible. You should hire an attorney so that the charge that you plead guilty to will not be a theft offense and you will be able to get a job.

A fourth degree crime in New Jersey exposes you to up to 18 months in prison and thousands of dollars in fines. I would say that under those circumstances you definitely need an experienced criminal defense lawyer to represent you. I am an attorney who has handled many cases similar to yours in various courts in New Jersey in the past. I would like to discuss your case with you in more detail. Please contact me at your convenience. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.

Sincerely yours, -Ronald Aronds, Esq.-

You should speak with an attorney (or a few of them) to discuss the case, your options, and what you want to happen. Some attorneys, such as myself, never charge for the initial consultation so you have nothing to lose. Call me at 732/247/3340 to discuss your case.
