Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

My girlfriend has been an honor student in her university and is very kind and gentle. she is not know for being an aggressive woman either. however she has been psychologically abused by her father, i wont get into details but this man tormented her. she has been charged with attempted murder because she attacked him with a knife. he suffered minor wounds but i believe she never intended to kill him but rather hurt him or scare him. is there a lawyer out there that can help her. neither she or my family have much money to pay the fees. we need a lawyer with a good heart; she doesn't belong in jail she is an honor student and first time offender. is there anyone who can help or give some advise?
