Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

Hello.

I was arrested in New Jersey for shoplifting. I went to court and the outcome of the court hearing was that it went from Shoplifting to "Disorderly Conduct". In New Jersey, would that apply as a conviction? If I was applying for a job position, would I have to disclose that in the question field "Have you ever been convicted of a crime?" or is it considered as a Misdeameanor. And if I do have to disclose it, when they run a background check- would it show the Disorderly Conduct or Shoplifting.

You have a conviction under the New Jersey Criminal Code. New Jersey does not have feloines and misdemeaonrs. To be completely truthful, if you are asked on a job application if you have ever been convicted of a crime, you should probably answer Yes. It will show up as a conviction for Disorderly Conduct. You have to wait five years from the date of your conviction to apply for an expungement to get your record cleared. In the future, never go to court without a lawyer.
