Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

I am under investigation for identity freud. However the FBI mention it to my previous lawyer that prosecutor doesn't really want to pursue this case. what happens next?...is it important to hire lawyer and trying to resolve it in pre-filing stage?..should I hire attorney now or after if I get charged?...at this point I am not sure its smart to contact FBI or prosecutor when i got the impression they don't want to pursue...what should I do?
