Almost 20 years ago I did something stupid and was arrested. I wasn''t a minor either. now I'm trying to get a new job and most ask for a background check.Could this show up on the background check? The arrest was for shoplifting a stupid $5 item, AGAIN I state a very stupid thing. I just need to know if at anytime does this go away?

This conviction will stay on your record forever, unless you take action to have it erased. You can petition the court for an Expungement of your record. It is not guaranteed that the judge will grant your expungement, and there is a lot of paperwork involved, but it is something you should seriously consider. I am an attorney who has handled many cases similar to yours in various courts throughout New Jersey in the past. I would like to discuss your case in more detail. Please contact me at your convenience. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.

The matter will show up in a background check until it is expunged. If you have had no other criminal matters since the shoplifting case an expungement can be done with three months, approximately.

The matter never goes away by itself. It will go away only by your obtaining an expungement. To obtain information concerning expungements, see http://www.njexpungements.com.
