Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey
Mail Theft
Is it ok for someone to steal mail from my house mailbox and tamper with the contents by replacing the original contents with a harassing note to me?
My fiance and I have been harassed by this person for months...we've been to the police regarding this issue (and many others) and they documented the mail theft. We were then told by the police department that they could not do anything, we needed to contact the local US Postal Authority. We contacted the US Postal Authority (in NJ) and were basically told that it's ok for him to steal my mail and replace the contents...as long as he did not steal a check/money/credit card.
I am certain that it was this person that committed the act and can also prove it was him. At the same time we received the mail that day, we received an email via AOL (with an AOL screen name), this email said basically the same thing as the letter that was tampered with. This AOL screen name could clearly connect him to mail theft.
Why is this not a crime?? I'm amazed, I always believed it was a Federal crime to steal U.S. mail out of your mail box...am I completely wrong?

Re: Mail Theft
You are being harassed and harassment is a crime. You need to file a charge in municipal court. You need the assistance of an attorney because the police are reluctant to deal with this person, who may have a friend in low places.
Call me if you like.

I agree with Mr. Moore. Normally I would tell you to call the police, but you have no alternative at this point. Call an attorney to get on the path of resolving this.
