Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey
Minor caught shoplifting
A friend and I were both caught shoplifting makeup worth $31.00 and were arrested. We are both 17 years old. The manager of the store is pressing charges against us and this is our first offense... what are we going to face in court? Do they contact our high schools for any information.. even to inform us of our arrest? and what about our juvenile records??

You will both have to get attorneys. There is a great chance that, with a good attorney, you can avoid just about any punishment. Have you parents call me at 732/247/3340 to discuss.
Re: Minor caught shoplifting
Your cases will be heard at the Superior Court Juvenile section and treated as juvenile criminal offenses. The dollar amount of the charges make this what is called a Disorderly Persons Offense, which carries potential maximum penalties of up to 6 months in juvenile detention, $1,000.00 in fines and community service. If you are found guilty you will have a juvenile record. You will be required to get a lawyer since you are juveniles, and if you can't afford to pay for private lawyers then the public defender can be assigned to represent you. There may be ways to beat the charge against you, however. I am an attorney who has handled many cases similar to yours in various courts throughout New Jersey in the past. Please have your parents contact me to discuss your case in more detail. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.

You were charged as juvin or adult?
Re: Minor caught shoplifting
You are fortunate that you were arrested as a juvenile. A conviction in juvenile court will not appear when a record check is done by a potential employer when you are adults. If you are first offenders you will not be sentenced to detention/jail.
Call me if you like.
