What exactly is meant by obstruction of justice? What steps can I take to help my case

Generally it is interference with legal proceedings whereby testimony or documents are tampered with or destroyed.

You should consult with counsel to develop a defense based on the facts of your case.

OoJ is a very general crime and there a probably a million things you can do to trigger it. Bottom line is, you need a good attorney as I don't see what you are going to accomplish by yourself. Even if this is a municipal court case, chances are the Judge will make you get an attorney.
