Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

first offense shoplifting, needs to avoid criminal record!!

Hi, I'm 20 years old, and I was caught shoplifting 12 dollars worth of stuff in New Jersey. I went to court today, and the prosecutor told me that I should seek counsel, as this is my first offense...What should I do?

If I plead guilty, will have face jail sentence and a criminal record?

Is there any way for me to get off without a criminal record? Please help

It is likely you can emerge from this without jail. As far as a criminal record goes, that depends on what counsel can persuade the prosecutor and/or the store to do. They do tend to take a hard-nosed approach to shoplifting charges, but each case is different.

This is a criminal charge, and if you are convicted you are facing potential jail time, heavy fines, and you will have a criminal record. The prosecutor is right in suggesting that you hire a lawyer due to the potentially severe penalties you are facing. Even though the value of the stuff was only $12.00 the penalties you are facing far outweigh that amount. I am an attorney who has handled many cases similar to yours in various courts throughout New Jersey in the past. Please contact me to discuss your case. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.

A shoplifting conviction with prevent you from being a doctor or a lawyer; from working for a bank, insurance company, stock brokerage firm or computer company.

To avoid this outcome your charge must be changed to something vague

and not so serious, such as being disordely. Shoplifting is theft.
