Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

Penal code 165.45

i have a friend who lives in New Jersey and has been charged with criminal possession of stolen property in the fourth degree. is there possible jail time for this felony since its under $3,000?

You sure this is in NJ because we don't use that type of statute. All of our criminal laws start with 2C. Anyway, if it is over $500, he is looking at 3 to 5 years in prison as a maximum in addition to fines. Regardless of his actual sentence, he will have a felony record. Thus, I suggest he call an attorney ASAP to deal with this.

Probation is likely, unless he has a prior criminal record. Then, it would all depend on what his prior criminal record consisted of.
