What is the penalty for assaulting a police officer

Someone I know fled to avoid arrest and hit a police officer who was not in a police car. He kept driving. What is the penalty.

What you describe is a very serious offense, aggravated assault, which depending on how it is written up can result in penalties of up to ten years in state prison and thousands of dollars in fines. Whoever did this will unquestionably need a lawyer to represent them. I am an attorney who has handled many cases similar to this in various courts in New Jersey in the past. Please contact me if you would like to discuss this in more detail. There is never any charge for simply discussing a case with me. Thank you.
