Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey
Photocopying Money
My son and his roommate were arrested in their dorm room for underage drinking at a party. Upon search of the room, a couple photocopies of a $10 bill were found in his and roommates bedroom. They told officer they did not know it was illegal. They had NO intent on passing bills. It was a stupid college innocent mistake. Now they are facing a third degree charge of forgery and were offered PTI which would dismiss this charge after a year. Sounds good from what they could have faced, but now I have doubts as to whether this could be made better. Please help!

Re: Photocopying Money
It sounds real crazy that they woudl charge them with this. A motion to dismiss may work to quickly get rid of this. If they take PTI, they can never use it again.
I would suggest you speak to an attorney before going through with PTI.
Re: Photocopying Money
If they want to go to trial, they may have options. A good attorney can make a jury undretsand what was going on. However, I don't think the prosecutor can voluntarily downgrade this too much further....
What county is it? That would give me a little more to base a decision on.
