Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

The police came to my house to arrest my wife at 8am. My children where still sleeping and my wife was very nervous and was frantically trying to find someone to watch the kids. The police told her that if she just makes it easier on herself and confesses to the crime they where investigating they would not call child services to take the kids and she will not be put in jail. She drove her own car to the police station and made a statement confessing to a crime she did not commit because she was concerned about the kids being left with a neighbor and she couldn't get in touch with me because I was out of the country on business. I believe she signed a confession because she was coerced into it. Is there anything we can do to reverse that statement, or should she just plead not guilty when she goes to court. Do the police and prosecutor have the burden of proof in order to convict her of anything. We dont know what to do at this point, we dont have the money to hire a criminal defense attorney and I make too much money for a public defender. Please advise. Thank you
