Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

posession of cds with intent to ingest

I have a spotless record and 8+ years military service, war veteran with honorable discharge. A friend left a bag in my car which contained an ''aeresol can'' that I discovered was a hideaway safe. when I got it opened I found a few bags of what I later learned was Heroin and a rolled up dollar. While I was flushing the drugs down the toilet my hernia pinched. My wife tried to call an ambulance but her cell died during the call. My wife insisted on entering the bathroom to be sure I was ok. I hid what I hadnt yet flushed in my pocket so she wouldnt worry. I had decided to drive myself to the ER(figuring id toss the rest as soon as I was away from my house) As I walked out to my car the cops (who must have traced her cell) arrived. I explained the reason we called for help and that I was on my way to the ER. there was no trouble or complaints but yet the officer reached into my pockets claiming to be ''checking me for ID'' and found the 4 bags I hadnt had the chance to flush. The case was sent back to the twp. For 2 yrs I have been on legal narcotic meds for a military injury, so some say the truth sounds like BS since I fit a profile(med problem, moves to other drugs)and want me not to deny it and go for pti. What should I do?
