What would be the most likely penalty for a first time offender arrested for attempting fornication with a prostitute, in the state of New Jersey?

This is a Disorderly Persons Offense. The maximum penalties are six months in jail and a $1,000.00 fine plus various other mandatory financial penalties. Nobody can say what the LIKELY penalties would be however. I am an attorney who has handled many cases similar to your in various courts throughout New Jersey in the past.
