what is the procedure in NJ to apply for ''record expagement''. I was told that I should go through a lawyer, but I want to do it myself.

Record Expungement

The procedures are detailed, technical and complex. Furthermore, even though the entire procedure is governed by state statute, every county has its own procedural quirks. The expungement procedure in New Jersey is in considerable disarray.

There are numerous traps that one can fall into. However, if you are determined to do it yourself, the place to begin would be the criminal records section of the county clerk's office of the county wherein the event occurred. That section is typically extremely helpful. ALSO that section often has model forms and instructions that can guide help you through the process.

Good luck.

Re: Record Expagement

Unfortunately, I am not so familiar with the procedure that I can give exact advice on how to do it yourself. The process does involve some legal research because there are certain qualifications about what the crime was/how long ago it was, etc. If you must do it yourself then a law library and speaking to the Clerk of Court in your county would be good places to start.

If, however, you are not having any luck, are located in South Jersey, and would like a complete, reasonable fee to perform all services required to have your record expunged, then please contact me at your convenience.

Thanks,
