As a first offender, for sentencing purposes in New Jersey, it is presumed that you not get a jail sentence. Most likely you will receive a fine which is less than $250.00.

The problem is that a shopliftng conviction is really a conviction for theft and many potential employers, such as computer, insurance, banking,

home health aide firms, will not hire you and ususally can not hire you even if they wanted to.

You need to have your charge changed to something other than shoplifting.

The maximum penalties are six months in jail and very heavy fines. If you have been convicted of shoplifting twice before then there is mandatory jail time.
