Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey
PLEASE help me with a SHOPLIFTING offense 2C:20-11b(3)
I am 48 yrs old, was arrested today for Shoplifting a DVD box set. I altered the price and paid a reduced amount for the DVD in conjuntion with other full price merchandise. I was stopped by security and told they observed me/ have proof I did this on three seperate occasions. I was charged, fingerprinted and released on my own recognisance (I have no prior criminal record)by the police. Whats going to happen to me when I appear to answer the summons which is this coming Monday (charged on Friday Afternoon) No time to contact a lawyer before court required appearence.

Nothing should happen on Monday. It is merely your first appearance in court on the charge. You are entitled to an adjournment to obtain the services of an attorney.
If you feel the need to see an attorney before Monday I will be in my office on Saturday morning.
Call me Saturday morning if you would like to come
in for a consultation.
Call me if you lot.

As you have been told little should happen at the initial appearance except for your plea ("not guilty") and a new court date.
You should seek the advice of counsel in the mean time. Be aware that in my experience many municipal judges view this as a very serious offense and seek to make examples of the guilty by imposing harsh fines and penalties.

Not much will happen at all, it'll be a big nothing but I do suggest you get an attorney shortly after court. Mr. Moore is up your way so you may want to call him. You are always free to call me as well if I can help in anyway.
