Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey
shoplifting
I am 18 years old and was caught shoplifting a pair of shorts at boscovs in new jersey. there was NO police involved. and they said that they werent pressing charges. I WAS NOT arrested. they said that they would send me a civil demand letter in the mail which would include a fine. and If i paid the fine then it would be like this never happend. is this true? after i pay the fine could they ever bring me to court? will this be put on my record? and how much will the fine be?

Re: shoplifting
While I doubt they will press charges, there is no way to tell you that they will not. Generally, pressing charges gets them nothing but wasted time in court. They just want the money from the civil demand to fund the loss prevention department.
