Speaking as both a father and a lawyer, my anser is yes. I would never allow my child to go to court on a criminal charge, even a smaller one such as this, without a lawyer. The maximum penalties on this charge are six months in jail, two years loss of ability to get a driver's license, $1,000.00 fine plus several hundred more dollars in mandatory monetary penalties, so the police officer you spoke with was minimizing things just so you wouldn't get upset. I have represented very many people in the past and present on drug charges so I am very familiar with the process. Please contact me to discuss your son's case in more detail. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.
