Right to a speedy trial.
After being arrested for a crime, how much time does the state have before going to trial?

There is no real set date. However, speedy trial is almost never an issue in NJ as Judge's get in trouble if cases get old. If the case is not that serious, it takes about a year, if it is a very serious case with a lot of issues, it could take 2 years. We have one case from July of 2002 and it is the oldest case in the county by a long shot. However, not all attorneys file as many motions as we do, so even the more complicated cases can take a year or less.
