Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

Given a summons for public urination in New Jersey. The cop said just pay the ticket online like you would a parking ticket. The appear in court box is not checked but there is a court date on the summons. The cop never said I have to appear in court. How will this affect my record? Is it wise to hire a lawyer for this or just pay the fine? Will this affect getting any professional licenses?

This ticket on your record won't help you, but exactly how it will impact you is unknown since I don't know what you are looking to go for. I can tell you that most people with these tickets do not hire an attorney.

This is a local ordinance violation. It is not a crimnal charge, but if you are found guilty or just pay the ticket you will have a record and you will have to wait two years before you can apply to get your record cleared. I don't know the facts of your case, so I can't advise you on whether you need a lawyer. Please contact me if you would like to discuss your case in more detail. Thank you.

Sincerely, Ronald Aronds, Esq.
