Legal Question in Criminal Law in New Jersey

Time frame to press charges

If someone gets away with shoplifting but they still have evidence and want to press charges, what would be the process and how long would it take ? Could they get a warrant in a couple of days after it happened ? And if that person was on parole, would they notify the persons PO ?

Depending upon the dollar value of the items shoplifted, the police have between one and five years from the date of the offense to bring charges. I am an attorney who has handled many cases similar to yours in various courts throughout New Jersey in the past. Please contact me to discuss your case in more detail. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their case. Thank you.

Re: Time frame to press charges

It all depends on of the item or items shoplifted. If the value is less thatn $200 there is a one year statute of limitations to file the shoplifting complaint. If the value of the item is $200 or more the statute of limitations for filing a shoplifting complaint because it would be an indictable offense.

There may never be a charge, but there will be sleepless nights. Perhaps that is the punishment for the offense.
