You have a right to the services of legal counsel and you also have the obligation to make reasonable efforts to obtain same. It would be good if you could indicate that you had at least make some appointments to consult about hiring an attorney.
Call me if you like.

I agree with Mr. Moore, if you have an appointment(s) at least set up, the judge will grant you more leeway. They will give you some time, but you cannot drag it out forever. What are you going to court for, you didn't mention it?
Feel free to give me a call at 732/247/3340 to discuss your case in more detail. If I cannot help you, I will recommend an attorney near you that can.

The court usally will give a new court date to retain an attorney. I give a free phone consultation.
Re: time to retain an attorney
You should just go to court and plea not guilty and then ask for some time to retain an attorney. The municipal courts ususally give you a week or two to hire a lawyer. I don't know exactly what kind of charge you have against you, but I am an attorney who has handled very many cases in various municipal courts in NJ in the past. I would like to discuss your case with you in more detail to see what I could do to help you. I never charge for simply talking to a person about their cae. Please give me a call at your convenience. Thank you.
